What is Pelvic Floor
Dysfunction?
Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur in both men and women. Weakness in pelvic floor muscles results from a mix of age-related atrophy, hormonal shifts, pregnancy, prostate issues, colostomy/ileostomy reversal and muscle miscoordination.
These conditions can compromise continence and may lead to pain. But the good news is that most symptoms are treatable through structured pelvic floor therapy program.
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy reduces pain and discomfort, improves bowel bladder control and pelvic alignment with biofeedback to restore functional core support.
Pelvic Floor Muscles
The pelvic floor is comprised of muscles that form a sling from the pelvic bone to the coccyx tailbone. These, and other muscles, provide bladder control, bowel control, vaginal support as well as support to the organs of the abdominal cavity.
Pelvic floor muscles weaken with age, increasing the risk of incontinence and pain. Surgeries like hysterectomy or prostatectomy can disrupt their structure and nerves, leading to weakness or poor coordination. In men, this may cause urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction.
Your Path to Relief
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy at La Mesa Rehab begins with a comprehensive evaluation by a Doctor of Physical Therapy.
Your pelvic floor therapy treatment program will be designed based on your evaluation to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. You will be instructed on muscle awareness, diaphragmatic strengthening and be treated with non-invasive modalities that have been successful at stimulating the nerve and muscle tissues to improve pelvic floor muscle function. Your program will be founded on education, exercise and lifestyle to address habits, posture, diet and stress.
